Macdonald attended Brisbane Grammar School from 1999–2002.
He was recruited through the 2003 Rookie Draft (QLD Zone) from Mt Gravatt. He was elevated to the senior list at the end of the 2003 season and made his debut for the Brisbane Lions in Round 10, 2004 against Melbourne.
Early in the 2006 season Macdonald injured his Anterior cruciate ligament, which resulted in him missing the remainder of 2006 and the first half of the 2007 season. The 2008 season was considered to be the best career performance for Joel MacDonald. After the 2009 AFL season the Brisbane Lions delisted Macdonald, along with 11 other players.
On December 15, 2009, Macdonald was drafted to Melbourne with the first selection in the Pre-season Draft.[1]
Macdonald and an acquaintance, a 23 year old Fig Tree Pocket man, were charged with being a public nuisance in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley in September 2008 after engaging in a fight near a taxi rank. Both were released on bail and later fined $250 with no conviction.[2]
Joel Macdonald is used as utility back as he can play variety of positions in the back line, such as half back flank, centre half back, back pocket and fullback.
